Freedom of Expression Award 2008 for
Nasim Fekrat and Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh
Nasim reported me last week from Italy the great news that he is the winner of the Freedom of Expression award 2008. Nasim Fekrat is a blogger from Kabul. http://www.afghanlord.org/
Nasim shares this prize ex aequo with Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh, an Afghan journalism student and reporter for the daily “Jahan e Now” (The new world). Unfortunately Sayed is currently detained in the Kabul prison.
Sayed send an article of an iranian intellectual to fellow students, in which he supported equal rights for women and invited Islam to modernize itself. In January 22nd 2008, a court in the city of Mazar i Sharif sentenced him to death for the crime of blasphemy as provided by the islamic law (the Sharia). Thanks to a wide international mobilitation, launched by Reporters sans Frontières, Amnesty International and Information Safety and Freedom and listened by the EU, the 21st october 2008 the sentence has been commuted to 20 years of prison.
Read more detailed information about Sayed Parwez in the motivation of the jury.
