Power regulator for ESP8266 ultra low power applications?

Q: I need to power my ESP with enough juice to meet the high connection sparks, but also be very very efficient for my deepsleep projects?

For several projects I used Microchip's mcp1700. It is actually a little underpowered for the spikes, but just for updating a simple sensor it works like a charm. I had one project powered with 3 AA's running for more than 26000 updates. Not bad ;-)  If you update every 15 minutes it stays alive for about 3,5 months.

Take a look at the Q-item called "Power Saving".
